Sense vs Cozi (2026): Which Family Organizer Should You Pick?

We make Sense, so read this knowing where we sit. We have tried to be fair, because Cozi has earned its place: it has been the default family organizer for over a decade, it is cheap, and millions of families run their week on it. Where Cozi is better, we say so. Where Sense is better, we say that too, and we show the arithmetic.

The short answer: Cozi is a mature, simple app that expects you to do the typing, and Cozi Max is its recent attempt at automation. Sense was built around not typing in the first place, and it bundles the rest of the household (chores, meals, kids, a display) into the same subscription.

Where Cozi Wins

Cozi has real advantages, and they are the reasons it is still the app people name first.

• Years of stability and a huge user base. Cozi holds a 4.8 on the App Store across roughly 399,000 ratings and a 4.7 on Google Play with more than 5 million downloads. It has been around long enough that the grandparents may already have it.
• It is simple. One shared login, a color per person, a calendar, a grocery list, a to-do list. Co-parents and grandparents can use it without a tutorial. Sense does more, and doing more always costs a little simplicity.
• It is cheap. Cozi Gold is $39 a year for up to 12 people. Sense Premium is $59.99 a year. If all you want is an ad-free shared calendar with month view and a birthday tracker, Cozi Gold costs less and does the job.
• Lists and recipes are genuinely good. The shared grocery list is what long-time users praise most. The recipe box imports from a URL, scales ingredients, schedules meals, and pushes ingredients to the shopping list.
• Cozi Max is a real AI answer. Since November 2025, Max lets you forward an email, a PDF, or a flyer photo to a private Cozi address and get calendar events back, and it generates recipes and weekly dinner plans. Credit where it is due: Cozi did not sit still.

Where Sense Wins

• Capture is the whole design, not an add-on. Forwarding an email, sharing a WhatsApp message, snapping a flyer, dropping in a PDF or screenshot, or just talking to Sense all put dates on the calendar, on iPhone, Android, and the web. On Cozi, capture exists only on the $79 Max tier and only in the mobile app.
• The free tier is not a countdown. Sense Free has no ads and no 30-day wall. You can plan next summer's camp on it. On Cozi Free you cannot see or add anything more than 30 days out, and reviewers who lost access to their own entries in May 2024 are still angry about it.
• Chores that actually motivate. Cozi's Chores feature, launched in April 2025, is a per-person list with daily or weekly repeats. Sense has chores, morning and bedtime routines, rewards, and allowance, and Kid Mode gives each child their own screen on the family tablet with no login, so the seven-year-old cannot wander into your email.
• A kitchen display. Sense Hub turns the old iPad in the drawer into an always-on family board showing today's schedule, dinner, chores, reminders, birthdays, and photos, and it dims at night. Cozi lives on your phone, so the family sees the plan only when you show them.
• An assistant that knows your family. Sense's AI chat answers "what does Thursday look like?", builds a meal plan from what is in the fridge, helps with homework, and suggests a rainy-day activity. Cozi Max's AI tools are narrower: import events, generate recipes, generate a dinner plan.
• Calendars in one place. Sense syncs with Google Calendar and subscribes to Apple iCloud, Outlook, and school or team iCal feeds, so work and family share one view. More on Cozi's feeds below.

Cozi Max vs Sense Capture: An Honest Read

Cozi Max's AI Event Import works like this: open the Calendar tab in the mobile app, copy your unique inbound address, and forward emails, PDFs, or flyer photos to it. Cozi extracts the dates and creates events. It is a good feature and it closes Cozi's biggest gap. Two caveats from Cozi's own launch post: the AI tools are mobile-app only, and Max is $79 a year, about double Gold.

Sense does the same forward-to-an-address trick (share@getsense.ai, attachments included), then goes wider: a WhatsApp message from the class group, a photo of the fridge flyer, a screenshot of a text, a dictated event, or a pasted link, from the phone or the web app. Because the same AI runs the chat, you can also ask it to move things, fix a mistake, or tell you what is on this weekend. And it comes with the rest of Premium (chores, meals, Hub, Kid Mode) for $59.99 a year instead of being a separate top tier.

One thing we could not verify: Cozi does not publish how long it keeps emails forwarded to AI Event Import. Sense deletes forwarded emails after 90 days and keeps only the extracted events.

Calendar Sync and the Lists That Go Missing

Sync direction. Cozi connects to Google, Apple, and Outlook through read-only iCal feeds in both directions. You can see a Google calendar inside Cozi but not edit it there, and you can subscribe to Cozi from Google, but Cozi says that feed may take up to 48 hours to update. For a household where one parent lives in Google Calendar, that is a daily annoyance. Sense syncs with Google Calendar directly, so events from every calendar show up in the same day view and on the Hub.

Reliability. Google Play reviews from late 2025 into 2026 describe items vanishing from shared grocery lists, events that save on one phone but never appear on another, slow lists, and repeated login prompts. One long-time user wrote that the app had "almost become unworkable" because of disappearing list items. Cozi's usual reply is to reinstall and contact support, and it ships updates regularly, so this may pass. If your Cozi list ate the milk again, we wrote a fix checklist in Cozi not syncing.

The Full Cost Over Three Years

Both apps have a free tier, so the real comparison is the paid plan a typical family lands on. For Cozi that is Gold at $39 a year, or Max at $79 a year for the AI import. Over three years Gold is 3 x $39 = $117 and Max is 3 x $79 = $237. Sense Premium billed annually is $59.99, so three years is 3 x $59.99 = $179.97. Monthly Sense costs more (36 x $6.99 = $251.64), so the annual plan is the fair comparison. Neither app needs hardware.

Cozi Gold is the cheapest paid option by about $63 over three years. The moment you want AI import, the order flips: Cozi Max costs about $57 more than Sense Premium over three years and still lacks chores with rewards, routines, Kid Mode, a display, and the AI chat. Cozi's App Store listing shows Max at $79.99, which widens that gap by a few dollars.

How to Choose

Pick Cozi if:

• You want the simplest shared calendar and grocery list, and everyone in the family, including grandparents, needs to get it on day one.
• Your family's events are few and easy to type in, and $39 a year for Gold is the budget.
• The recipe box and meal planner matter more to you than chores or automation.

Pick Sense if:

• School, camp, and team email is the thing that eats your evenings, and you want the dates on the calendar without typing them.
• You want chores, routines, rewards, meal plans, and the calendar in one subscription instead of three apps.
• You have an old tablet and want a family display in the kitchen.
• You want a free tier that is not capped at 30 days and does not show ads.

Sense vs Cozi: The Bottom Line

Cozi is the incumbent for good reasons. It is inexpensive, familiar, and simple, and its lists and recipes are as good as any in the category. If your family's calendar is light and you like entering the week on Sunday night, Cozi Gold at $39 a year is hard to beat, and Cozi Max shows the company is taking automation seriously.

Sense is for the family where the Sunday-night typing is the problem. Forward the newsletter, share the WhatsApp message, snap the flyer, and the calendar fills itself for everyone. The same app runs the chores, plans the dinners, gives each kid a screen, and puts the day on the kitchen tablet. For $59.99 a year that is less than Cozi Max and a good deal more organizer.
